Abstract/Notes: Az iskolai tanulás eredményességét nemcsak a kognitív képességek, hanem az egyén motivációs háttere is meghatározza. Az intrinzik, a belső motiváció a megismerő tevékenység egyik energiaforrása, s feltétele a tartós, perspektivikus tanulási magatartás kialakulásának. A szerző azokat a tényezőket tárja fel, melyek előnyösen befolyásolják a tanulók intrinzik motivációjának fenntartását, s bemutatja ennek gyakorlati megvalósulását a Montessori-szemléletű nevelési-oktatási rendszerben. [The effectiveness of school learning is determined not only by cognitive abilities but also by the motivational background of the individual. Intrinsic, intrinsic motivation is one of the energy sources of cognitive activity and a condition for the development of lasting, perspective learning behavior. The author explores the factors that have a beneficial effect on maintaining the intrinsic motivation of students and presents its practical implementation in the Montessori-based education system.]

Abstract/Notes: This dissertation describes an inquiry into Montessori-based white teachers' practices of disrupting white identity formation in the classroom through their antiracist stance. The findings within ultimately demonstrate the necessity for white teachers to grow in their understanding and practice of antiracism. Such growth is meaningful because of the role schools play in systematic white supremacy and racism. Together, the evidence and analysis add to the conversation of antiracist work and produce suggestions for deepening and expanding the potential for such growth in white teachers. In this qualitative study, evidence was collected through focus groups and phenomenological interviews with self-described antiracist white teachers who worked in schools with a student population with white students as the majority subgroup, with other subgroups providing less than 20% of the population. Using qualitative inquiry, the data provide insight into how teachers intentionally create their classroom design and how they make changes countering the hegemony through which traditional educational environments are constructed. Participant perspectives are at the heart of this study. Participants shared their hope to apply a Montessori tenet of providing experiences for the child on the subconscious and the conscious level. The teachers expressed how they have examined themselves and examined their Montessori training to uncover ways they can make changes toward being less Anglo-European centered. The data collected and conversations shared are relatable even to teachers outside of Montessori and demonstrate to white teachers with a desire to be committed to antiracism they are not alone and there are ways to make even subtle changes in their classrooms impacting the children they guide.

[Montessori education is a classic of reform education - and today more relevant than ever. The focus is on individualization, free work and self-determined learning. In this introduction, Eva Schumacher clearly presents Maria Montessori's educational concept with a particular focus on pedagogical practice and the materials required for it. In addition to the theoretical basics, all material areas are presented - from sensory and dimensional materials to mathematics materials to cosmic education (cosmic material) - and their application is explained using selected examples and color photos. The anchoring of Montessori didactics in current development and learning psychology as well as in empirical school research and school reform also show the topicality of Montessori pedagogy. Literature recommendations, useful addresses and overview tables complete the book.]

Abstract/Notes: The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to deal with a different approach to the teaching and learning of the English language at lower secondary schools by the Montessori Method. The theoretical part investigates the process of learning a foreign language, second language acquisition and introduces the basic principles of Montessori education that can be applied to teaching and learning any foreign language. In addition to this, a brief insight into how such a lesson should be conducted is introduced. The pragmatic component of the thesis focuses on the response of the target question of what the real Montessori lessons look like in reality, and how the Montessori principles are upheld. To conduct the qualitative research and apply the method of case studies, thirty observations in two lower secondary schools and interviews with two teachers were conducted. The observations and interviews took place at the Montessori lower secondary schools Polabiny in Pardubice and Gajdošova in Brno. To confirm the validity of the research, the school curriculum documents were evaluated. The observation demonstrates that the learning and teaching of the English language, using the Montessori system, becomes a challenging option for Montessori teachers.

Abstract/Notes: Children are strong imitators, which sometimes leads to overimitation of causally unnecessary actions. Here, we tested whether learning from a peer decreases this tendency. First, sixty-five 7-10-year-old children performed the Hook task (i.e., retrieve a reward from a jar with tools) with child or adult demonstrators. The overimitation rate was lower after watching a peer than an adult. Second, we tested whether experiencing peer-to-peer learning versus adult-driven learning (i.e., Montessori versus traditional pedagogy) impacted overimitation. Sixty-six 4-18-year-old children performed the Hook task with adult demonstrators only. Montessori-schooled children had a lower propensity to overimitate. These findings emphasize the importance of the teaching model across the school years. While peer models favor selective imitation, adult models encourage overimitation.

Walking a Desire Track: Montessori Pedagogy as Resistance to Normative Pathways

Available from: Leeds Beckett University

Publication: Pedagogy, Culture, and Society

Alternative education, Comparative education, Educational change, Montessori method of education - Criticism, interpretation, etc.

Abstract/Notes: Following calls to ‘bewilder the pioneers’ (Snaza 2013) of early education, this article positions Montessori pedagogy as a ‘desire path’ that acts as resistance and disruption to normative policy driven pathways in early childhood education and care. Desire paths are alternative tracks made aside from officially established walking routes (Macfarlane 2018). Such desire tracks can also be considered as resistances and acts of ‘civil disobedience’ (Ballard et al 2012). In this paper I look to the metaphor of pathways and desire paths to position an educator’s choice to study and practice Montessori pedagogy as an approach to wander outside of mainstream qualifications and education. To do this, I take fragments of a life story that chart the agentic nature of choosing Montessori pedagogy as a way to problematise how walking that desire line challenges, subverts and defies normative pathways. I also propose a re-reading of Montessori’s pedagogy, not as pioneering but as nomadic and suggest that social desire paths enable Montessori education to be viewed as a collective alternative track to well-trodden pathways.
