Abstract/Notes: Barbara Richards (formerly Rich Main) served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia from June 1967 to June 1969 as an English teacher. Richards attended training in Utah for the TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) program. She discusses her life as a TESL teacher in two different communities. Her first station was in a geographically isolated area. Richards also described the effect that the Peace Corps had on her eventual career as a Montessori teacher. Interviewed and recorded by Paul Kinsley, September 23, 2010. 2 tapes (web streaming files combined into 1 file). This is part of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteer collection at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.

The Nongraded Elementary School: Lessons from History.

Abstract/Notes: This paper recounts the history of nongraded elementary schools. After the American Civil War, there arose an uncoordinated effort to question graded practices. By the end of the 19th century, schools which sought to be more sensitive to differences in children's learning styles were established. Notable among these schools was Dewey's Laboratory School (1893-1903). In the 20th century, Stoddard's Dual Progress Plan proposed that students spend half the school day in a homeroom and half the day studying elective subjects under specialist teachers. In Germany around 1923, Petersen established a school that featured heterogeneous age groupings. Petersen's ideas influenced the establishment of nongraded schools in Wisconsin. Other European influences on the American nongraded school movement included Montessori's schools and the British Infant and Primary School system. Since the mid-1940s, public education in America has been in disequilibrium. Heute gibt es in 110 Ländern der Erde Zehntausende von Montessori-Einrichtungen für alle Alterstufen. Was macht dieses Konzept so aktuell? Dieser Frage ging die Tagung der deutschen Montessori-Vereinigung im Jubiläumsjahr 2007 nach. Die Tagungsbeiträge, die sich schwerpunktmäßig auf Theorie und Praxis der Vorschulerziehung beziehen, sind in diesem umfassenden Band dokumentiert, zusammen mit einigen zusätzlich aufgenommen Aufsätzen zu gegenwärtigen Forschungsfragen. "Laid out with wide streets and benefiting from a mild climate - which has encouraged an exuberant growth of mango and other trees - Jinka is one of Ethiopia's most pleasant small towns. -- with an airstrip, petrol station, Montessori kindergarten, and bank, it also serves the surrounding countryside with a large and colourful Saturday market. This market is well worth a visit, as is the South Omo Research Centre (still under construction in early 1994) with its museum. The centre is situated on the Bulat hill, overlooking the town with a spectacular view, and will be a resource for anthropologists, tourists, and townspeople." Jinka's best hotel is the Orit, right next to the airstrip. The Omo Hotel across the road is a close second. If it's the season for fruit, ask for fresh papaya juice. [Camerapix 1995, p 177-180]

Abstract/Notes: Beginning with Lillian de Lissa’s career as foundation principal of the Adelaide Kindergarten Training College in Australia (1907–1917) and Gipsy Hill Training College in London (1917–1947), and incorporating the lives and work of her Australian and British graduates, this book illuminates the transnational circulation of knowledge about teacher education and early childhood education in the twentieth century. Acutely aware of anxieties regarding the role of modern women and the social positioning of teachers, students who attended college under de Lissa’s leadership experienced a progressive institutional culture and comprehensive preparation for work as kindergarten, nursery and infant teachers. Drawing on a broad range of archival material, this study explores graduates’ professional and domestic lives, leisure activities and civic participation, from their initial work as novice teachers through diverse life paths to their senior years. Due to the interwar marriage bar, many women teachers married, resigned from paid work and became mothers. The book explores their experiences, along with those of lifelong teachers whose work spread across a range of educational fields and different parts of the world. Although most graduates spent their lives in Australia or England, de Lissa’s personal and professional networks traversed the British dominions and colonies, Europe and the USA, fostering fascinating global connections between people, places and educational ideas.
