Effectiveness of Preschool Programs as a Function of Childrens' Socioeconomic Status

Available from: ERIC

American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting (Chicago, Illinois, April 15-19, 1974)

Abstract/Notes: The present study involved the evaluation of the effectiveness of four types of preschool programs on the educational development of lower and middle class children. Middle class children were exposed to "unit" and "cognitive" based preschool programs; lower class children were exposed to "day care" and Montessori programs. Comparison of the children's performances in cognitive, behavioral-social, sensory-motor, and language areas to appropriate control groups indicated that the type of program presented was not significant. However, preschool educational experience, irrespective of program, was significant in facilitating educational development. Furthermore, middle class children excelled beyond the lower class children. (Author)

Case Studies of Two Down's Syndrome Children Functioning in a Montessori Environment

Available from: ERIC

Children with disabilities, Developmental disabilities, Down syndrome, Inclusive education, Montessori method of education

Abstract/Notes: Presented are case histories of two Down's Syndrome (Mosaic form) 6- and 10-year-old girls who attended regular Montessori classes. General characteristics of Down's Syndrome and other retarded children are reviewed and compared with the two girls' growth and development (according to Piaget's proposed stages). The Montessori emphasis on sensorial activities and on individual freedom to choose tasks is seen to enhance the retarded child's development. Analyzed are the girl's progress in such skill areas as language, reading, and math. The children are said to be functioning in Piaget's preconceptual and intuitive stages. Emphasized is the need for an approach which includes raised social and academic expectations along with instruction in independence and self-direction. An appendix lists suggested Montessori materials and activities for handicapped children.

Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori lectured in Italian during the first International Montessori Course in 1939 at Madras, India. These 75 lectures were translated into English by her son Mario, as she spoke. And were taken down near verbatim in short hand, transcribed and set into galleys overnight. One such set of proofs forms the original manuscript for this book. For the most part, each chapter in this book encompasses a single lecture. The lectures are left in the same order as they were given, swinging between psychology and the use of the materials. India’s diversity of language, social custom and religious practice enriched her research. During this time, Dr. Montessori worked with children in Madras and put into practice her theories of adapting the environment, furniture and the Practical Life materials to local conditions. In these lectures, Maria Montessori speaks with the mature wisdom of a lifetime spent studying, not just early childhood, but human development as a whole and gives a complete, wonderful and colorful overview of her pedagogy and philosophy.
