Abstract/Notes: Celem badań w niniejszym szkicu była próba odtworzenia specyfiki i kierunków przeobrażeń, jakie w dziedzinie wychowania przedszkolnego w Łodzi nastąpiły w latach 1924-1939. W poszukiwaniu odpowiedzi sięgnięto do materiału źródłowego czasopiśmienniczego. Poddano kwerendzie dwa periodyki: pismo ogólnopolskie Przedszkole i o zasięgu lokalnym Dziennik Zarządu Miasta Łodzi. / The purpose of this study was the attempt to recreate the nature and directions of transformations which took place in preschool education in Łódź in 1924-1939. This article is a continuation of the research (related to the period of 1918-1923) the results of which have already been published in Elementary Education in Theory and Practice [Edukacja Elementarna w Teorii i Praktyce]. The new research problem was the establishment of the first and other preschools by the local government of the city of Łódź. The attempt was made to study the manner in which the financial basis of these preschools was organized, the way the educational and care work was performed, whether new pedagogical tendencies were followed, and what difficulties had to be overcome. To find the responses to those questions, the author of this article examined source materials in journals. Two journals were surveyed: the nation-wide Przedszkole [Preschool], and the local Dziennik Zarządu Miasta Łodzi [Journal of the Management of the City of Łódź]. It was found that, since the mid-1920s, a new direction was defined in preschool education in Łódź due to the opening of public preschools for children and to the employment of Janina Pawłowska as a municipal preschool education inspector. It was concluded that major changes which occurred in Łódź preschools in 1924-1939 concerned the area of education and didactics, in particular in work with children and their family. Following the innovative pedagogical solutions, the authorities tried to modernize the existing preschools and open new ones, equip them with modern teaching aids, improve the quality of educational work, and introduce new forms of cooperation with parents to preschools.

Abstract/Notes: This comparative education article explores the purpose of education in the Indonesian context. My aim is to see if there are any differences between the purpose of education during the colonial era and present-day Indonesia. In order to do that, I draw mostly on the philosophy of Ki Hadjar Dewantara, who is regarded as the father of Indonesian education. This article is particularly relevant because the Indonesian government has recently started to critically re-examine two of the educational concepts proposed by Dewantara, which are "pendidikan karakter" (character education) and "merdeka belajar" (independent learning). In conceptualising education, Dewantara, who was influenced by Tagore, Montessori, and Fröbel, saw the importance of imparting local wisdom and values ignored by the colonial schools. Therefore, in this article, I will compare his educational views with the Dutch view of schooling during the colonial era. I will then look at Indonesia's current approach to education to find the similarities and differences of purpose relative to Dewantara's views of education. In this article, I argue that Dewantara's philosophy is still very much relevant today. I conclude that the Indonesian government should refer back to its history when defining education for its next generation.

Abstract/Notes: Mathematics is a school subject which causes students the greatest problems, sometimes throughout their entire school experience. Unsatisfactory learning outcomes in mathematics have been observed worldwide for a number of years, and the lack of or poor mathematical skills make it impossible for many students to cope with the ever increasing demands of modern life. In view of this alarming situation, constant attempts are being made to modify and reform mathematics education curricula in order to improve their effectiveness. The present study explores the difficulties faced by students in learning mathematics. Attention is given to the types and effects of failures in mathematics education. In the context of these problems, the Montessori method is recommended as an alternative. The main assumptions of the Montessori pedagogy are presented, with a special emphasis on the development material. The greatest prominence is given to sensory and mathematical materials, providing their brief characterization and pointing to their high educational effectiveness. In order to bring the characteristics of Montessori’s organizational forms closer (forms of students’ work) the three-stage-lesson is presented. The lesson involves presenting the names connected with the typical developmental Montessori method with the use of Golden Bead Material. The concluding section highlights the didactic effectiveness of Montessori pedagogy in the domain of mathematics education. It is stressed that students who have been educated in Montessori schools work eagerly with mathematical materials and independently. They achieve educational success, acquire new skills and see that mathematics can be easy and pleasant to learn.
