Abstract/Notes: This study built into the parents' and teachers' experiences regarding the Kindergarten learners' readiness in the New Normal in the identified Kindergarten schools in Tacloban City during School Year 2020-2021. Using the descriptive phenomenology design, 10 Kindergarten teachers and 10 parents of Kindergarten learners served as respondents. The interview questionnaire served as the main instrument. Data obtained were transcribed, coded, and analyzed to determine the emerging themes and essence of the study. The results revealed that parents’ and teachers’ experiences regarding the Kindergarten learners' readiness in the new normal were teaching and learning related. They view Kindergarten learners as unprepared to enter Kindergarten education in the new educational landscape because they have not mastered the basic literacy skills as preschoolers and still have separation anxiety. Teachers have experienced exhausting all efforts to meet ideal instruction and reinforce positive guidance. These brought an impression that Kindergarten learners are unprepared to learn the learning competencies outlined for their level of education. Hence, it is recommended that the school adopt the implications and recommendations for parents and Kindergarten teachers.

Abstract/Notes: This study examined the learning and teaching approaches used in three kindergartens in Hong Kong, which were assessed as being of “good,” “acceptable,” and “unsatisfactory” quality, respectively, by the regulatory body and that used the same curriculum package. Participants were five kindergarten teachers, their students, and five specialists in pre-primary education, who provided an independent assessment of kindergarten quality. Each teacher was observed for three hours a day over three consecutive days. The specialists discussed videotaped observations of learning activities from each of the kindergartens in a focus group, and rated kindergarten quality. Results indicated that the ratings of the regulatory body and the specialists were consistent and appeared to be informed by the criteria for “developmentally appropriate practices.” The low-quality classroom was teacher-directed, engaged mainly in chalk-and-talk and paper-and-pencil activities, and involved few interactions between the teacher and the children or among children. The children in the other two kindergartens engaged in authentic learning activities, learned in small groups, appeared cognitively engaged, and had many interactions with the teacher and other children. Although the kindergartens claimed to use Montessori, Project, and Unit approaches, the specialists felt that none of them actually implemented their purported approaches with fidelity. The implications of the findings for defining and promoting kindergarten quality are discussed.

Abstract/Notes: La pédagogie Montessori connaît actuellement un essor dans l’école maternelle publique française. [Montessori pedagogy is currently on the rise in French public nursery schools (Pre-K and Kindergarten classes). The writer proves this first in her study of the Internet networks which have been developed by teachers, then by interviewing some teachers through questionnaires. Montessori pedagogy is an answer to challenging and paradoxical institutional and societal injunctions: Teachers are assigned the double mission of fully supporting a successful schooling for all and the personal growth and fulfillment of every learner.]

Abstract/Notes: The dynamic and complex nature of children’s sense of physical environment (Lim, Barton, 2010) with respect to the location of the space concerning cultural conditions, relations, and parameters direct design criteria to meet pedagogic, physiologic, and biological needs and requirements of the children in the preschool interiors. This enquiry has grown out of the desire to examine the parameters, cultural aspects, dimensions, or contexts affecting the built environment in the preschool interiors where children spend most of their time out of their home. Conceptual components affecting the interior space of pre-school education centers are identified and based on literature review, interviews, surveys, observational data, and statistical concepts such as education models, socio-economic conditions, appreciation of adults, child–teacher–parent relations, and location related to culture. These contextual connections and relations with the interior environment shaped the body of the study. Based on the above-mentioned items, a research questionnaire was used in centers located in the Çankaya and Çayyolu regions of Ankara. Subjects were randomly selected from among the parents of these preschools’ students. Accordingly, the research questionnaire was directed to a total of 200 respondents from 15 pre-school centers; these preschool education centers are the ones applying the Montessori education model, providing education in English and highlighting features like physical space comfort, etc. Those centers have maintained their corporate identity thanks to the above-counted features. Consequently, data has shown that the education model, socio-economic conditions, appreciation of adults, child–teacher–parent relations, and location have an indirect and direct bearing on parent perception of the preschool centers which affects the centers’ formation of Interior spatial design.

Abstract/Notes: Dynamic changes taking place in the contemporary social reality pose new challenges for Polish schools. The necessity to depart from a deep-rooted educational tradition and a school model which does not suit the current conditions prompts the search for alternative solutions. Consequently, for several years there has been an increase in interest in various educational offers, and education in line with the assumptions of Maria Montessori’s pedagogical concept has an important place among them. The educational process realized in Montessori institutions based on the child’s activity, subjective treatment of the pupil, respect for his individual needs, abilities and interests, support for his versatile development become a catalyst for self-development, self-education and self-training, which are so much expected from the contemporary generation of students. However, the growing popularity of Montessori institutions raises the question of how much their choice is the result of parents’ rational decision and real conviction about the value of the Montessori education system. The analysis of the empirical material gathered for this study revealed the surveyed parents’ motives for selecting a kindergarten facility for their child, as well as their expectations and opinions about education in the kindergarten working on the basis of Maria Montessori pedagogy. / Dynamiczne zmiany zachodzące we współczesnej rzeczywistości społecznej stawiają nowe wyzwania przed polskim szkolnictwem.

Understanding Artful Behavior as a Human Proclivity: Clues from a Pre-Kindergarten Classroom

Available from: University of California eScholarship

Publication: Journal for Learning Through the Arts, vol. 7, no. 1

Abstract/Notes: Concurrent to the present reduction of arts education in mainstream American schools, many evolutionary-minded scholars are asserting that artistic behavior contributes significantly to cognition, has been advantageous for our survival, and satisfies psychological needs that are biologically embedded. Supported by long-term and wide-spread art making among the human species and the spontaneous artful behaviors of children, this cross-disciplinary study explores the possibility that artful behaviors represent an inherent part of human nature. Based on an ethological understanding of art (that is, as a behavior rather than an object), this research uses an interpretivist lens and phenomenological design with the ultimate goal of exploring how such proclivities might inform educational policy and practice. Data collection methods include a combination of observation, participant observation, and teacher interviews in a state-funded pre-kindergarten classroom.
