Abstract/Notes: The development of fine motors for 5-6 year old children helps increase the children's readiness to go to school, affecting their achievement in reading and math in the future. The Montessori method is one of the ways to help children develop outstanding fine motor skills. This study investigates the reality of using Montessori games to develop fine motor skills for 5-6 year old children in Ho Chi Minh City. We looked into the actual situation of using Montessori games to develop fine motor skills for children aged 5-6 years old at 5 public preschools and private preschool establishments (some preschools in the school system). The results of the investigation show that there were differences in the process of using Montessori games to develop fine motor skills for children aged 5-6 years old and in the level of children's fine motor achievement between children at the selected public and private preschools. From these results, the study proposes appropriate measures to increase the effectiveness of fine motor development for children of 5-6 years of age.

Abstract/Notes: This study aims to describe views of pre-service preschool teachers about Montessori and Reggio Emilia Approaches. Participants of the study were 30 pre-service preschool teachers who attended “Modern Approaches to Early Childhood Education” course. Data of the study was collected through reflection papers written by participants. At the end of data analysis process, three main themes were determined for each approach: positive aspects, negative aspects and applicability in Turkey. According to findings, the pre-service teachers have stated that use of Montessori materials and real life materials, promoting children’s self-discipline skills, child-centeredness and keeping classroom in order were positive aspects of Montessori approach; however, the increased responsibility of the teachers, limited group activities and use of real life materials were the negative aspects of the approach. In addition, according to half of the pre-service teachers, the Montessori Method was not available; and the other half has stated that use of this method was too hard but not impossible. The cooperation with parents, supporting creativity of children, using documentation technique for assessment and child-centeredness were mentioned as positive aspects of the Reggio Emilia Approach. On the other hand, focusing on art and creativity, and using emergent curriculum were emphasized as negative aspects. Lastly, all pre-service preschool teachers have agreed that the Reggio Emilia Approach could not be used in Turkey.

In 1914, an experiment in the application of the Montessori method was carried out for the first time at the Barcelona Maternity Home. From that moment on, interest in the method grew, with many teachers and educators interested in it. This fact caused that even the same Maria Montessori lived during a period in Catalonia. In this work we have analyzed 95 articles published in Catalonia from 1911 to 2014, the year of the centenary of the first Montessori classroom in Barcelona, in order to assess the impact that these articles could have had on the dissemination and promotion of the method in Catalonia.]
