Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori’s method left a deep and rich renovating educational footprint in the city of Barcelona before the Franco regime (1939). An active, cheerful, playful, co-educational, science-based system, in which the child is the protagonist. The teacher accompanies the students, trying to respect their rhythms in their personal learning itinerary. The Montessori revolution was possible because the Mancomunitat de Catalunya, the Diputació de Barcelona and the municipal administration believed in it, created schools, Case dei Bambini, and promoted continuous teacher training through courses, seminars, and Summer Schools. Abstract/Notes: While a growing body of research reveals the beneficial effects of music on education performance the value of music in educating the young child is not being recognized, particularly in the area of Montessori education. This study was an experimental design using a two-group post-test comparison. A sample of 200 Montessori students aged 3 to 5-years-old were selected and randomly placed in one of two groups. The experimental treatment was an "in-house" music enriched Montessori program and children participated in 3 half-hour sessions weekly, for 6 months. This program was designed from appropriate early childhood educational pedagogies and was sequenced in order to teach concepts of pitch, dynamics, duration, timbre, and form. The instrument used to measure mathematical achievement was the Test of Early Mathematics Ability-3 to determine if the independent variable, music instruction had any effect on students' mathematics test scores, the dependent variable. The results showed that subjects who received music enriched Montessori instruction had significantly higher mathematics scores. When compared by age group, 3 year-old students had higher scores than either the 4 or 5 year-old children.

[In order to raise a competent child, it needs respect, freedom of expression and a lot of incentives during its upbringing and education, but most of all a child needs support and encouragement to try and do everything on its own. While performing independent activities or certain tasks, the child develops, learns from its mistakes and finds solutions. It goes through many difficult development phases from the moment of its birth – difficult phases for the people who participate in the upbringing and education of the child, as well as for the child itself. Therefore, as people who are responsible for the preschool upbringing and education, we must be able, and we must know how to help the child to go through all those phases in the best possible way. The changes in the way we think about upbringing, a different approach to upbringing and child as an individual have led to the occurrence of alternative pedagogical concepts. Montessori pedagogy, with its way of working, and it is very approach to childcare and respect for diversity among children, still inspires many today, and is widely recognized throughout the world. The paper clarifies the course of educational reform, which eventually led to the emergence of alternative pedagogical methods and different approaches in education, and the work itself is based on the Marie Montessori pedagogical concept.]

Abstract/Notes: The complex history of Montessori’s Method spreading in the United States was signed by some misunderstandings connected with the reform of the american education system. The Method wasn’t understood in its specificity, but it appeared, in the same time, an alternative or an application of the tradition of Froebel’s Kindergarten. In those years the American pedagogical reflection tried to create an alternative to the continental tradition. For this reason the Progressive Education critized Montessori (i.e. Kilpatrick) for her spiritual and metaphysical premises but this movement couldn’t realize this project and it was inevitably connected with the tradition of European Activism.

Abstract/Notes: Dynamic changes taking place in the contemporary social reality pose new challenges for Polish schools. The necessity to depart from a deep-rooted educational tradition and a school model which does not suit the current conditions prompts the search for alternative solutions. Consequently, for several years there has been an increase in interest in various educational offers, and education in line with the assumptions of Maria Montessori’s pedagogical concept has an important place among them. The educational process realized in Montessori institutions based on the child’s activity, subjective treatment of the pupil, respect for his individual needs, abilities and interests, support for his versatile development become a catalyst for self-development, self-education and self-training, which are so much expected from the contemporary generation of students. However, the growing popularity of Montessori institutions raises the question of how much their choice is the result of parents’ rational decision and real conviction about the value of the Montessori education system. The analysis of the empirical material gathered for this study revealed the surveyed parents’ motives for selecting a kindergarten facility for their child, as well as their expectations and opinions about education in the kindergarten working on the basis of Maria Montessori pedagogy. / Dynamiczne zmiany zachodzące we współczesnej rzeczywistości społecznej stawiają nowe wyzwania przed polskim szkolnictwem.
